The Balance Room keeps our group classes small for a reason. This ensures that all of our students enjoy a safe and effective workout, and we can often tailor the class to more individualized needs with the option of hands-on assistance. Our small class size fosters an intimate sense of community with like-minded practitioners.
Please note that all small-group reformer classes are held at our 501 Fitzwater Street location, and all of our small-group mat classes are held at our 811 s. 6th street location.

Our studio manages all of our group classes through a scheduling platform called Mindbody. When you go to make your first booking, our page will direct you to set up a profile on Mindbody. Once your profile is set up, you’ll be able to easily book and manage all of your appointments in the future directly via the Mindbody site or app. The app is available for download on iOS and Android. You can continue to access our group class schedule via this page or you can view the entire schedule directly on our Mindbody studio page here.
Our group classes have at most eight students. Yes, we offer private sessions for people who want individualized attention, you can learn more about our private sessions here.
We offer small group mat, reformer & TRX classes, with a number of specialty classes sprinkled throughout our schedule.
For beginners, we recommend starting with our foundational reformer class on Tuesdays at 5:30 PM and Sundays at 11:00 AM. In addition, all our mat classes are suitable for beginners and are taught to an all-level audience.
The pilates reformer was invented by Joseph Pilates, and it consists of a bed-like frame with a flat platform (called a carriage) on it that rolls back and forth on wheels. The carriage is attached to the frame by springs at varying tension, allowing the practitioner to push or pull against varying levels of weight. Exercising on the reformer is very much a resistance and strength training workout that will help improve mobility, flexibility, and balance. Many mat pilates exercises can be done on the reformer with the added support of the springs, however, the spring load can also make many exercises feel more challenging and destabilizing.
If you are taking a group equipment class, you will be using the reformer and TRX suspension system only. A pilates mat class is done solely on a mat, often with the assistance of small props.
TRX stands for Total Resistance Exercises. It is a form of suspension training that uses bodyweight exercises to develop strength, balance, flexibility, and core strength. It is such a great compliment to pilates, and we often meld together TRX exercises with some traditional mat pilates sequences! TRX training is an effective way to build functional strength, and we use it a ton to develop stability & balance off of the reformer.
The Balance Room’s founder, Mari, is certified in Mat I and II through Balanced Body. She retook her mat certification and a comprehensive 450-hour equipment training course at Drexel Pilates. Mari is a fully certified TRX trainer and a Level I Movement for Trauma facilitator. You can view all of our instructors through our About Us page. You can click through their individual Mindbody profiles to learn more about their specific training, certifications, specialties, and the types of classes they offer.
Just come with an open mind and a willingness to learn! Wear clothes that you are comfortable exercising in, and bring a water bottle in case you get thirsty. We try to limit our use of single-use items in the studio, so we do not offer disposable bottles or cups but we do have a filtered water cooler. We’ll provide mats and workout equipment, so there’s no need to bring your own.
For group classes, we ask that you cancel no later than 6 hours prior to the start of class. We ask that you respect that we are a very small business; our small class size means every enrollment counts. That said, we do make exceptions for true emergencies.
We strongly suggest attending a foundational class or scheduling a private session if you have never been on a reformer before. This recommendation is for your safety, and also so you can get the most out of your class!
